About Khaled Abu-Ihweij, MD
For Dr. Khaled Abu-Ihweij and his patients, there’s nothing more elemental than breathing and sleep. Helping people improve those aspects of their health is what he likes best about working in medicine.
Dr. Abu-Ihweij cares for patients experiencing acute or chronic lung and respiratory conditions, with a focus on treating severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He has extensive experience in diagnostic testing for pulmonary and sleep disorders and in advanced bronchoscopy for the diagnosis of lung cancer. He is an expert in treating sleep disorders including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, and REM behavior disorder.
Dr. Abu-Ihweij takes a holistic approach to patient care. He notes, for example, that you can’t get restful sleep if your asthma is not well controlled. Since shortness of breath is an interplay of the lungs, heart, blood and muscles, among other factors, Dr. Abu-Ihweij evaluates and treats the whole patient to enable improved lung function and help them sleep better.
After graduating with a master’s in cell and molecular biology from Tulane University, Dr. Abu-Ihweij earned his medical degree at St. George’s University in Grenada. He completed his residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in pulmonary medicine and critical care at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He also completed a fellowship in sleep medicine at the University of Pennsylvania / Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine. He is also board eligible in sleep medicine.
Dr. Abu-Ihweij chooses to practice at Redeemer, in part, because of its strong sense of community. He speaks both English and Arabic.
Outside of work, Dr. Abu-Ihweij is a huge fan of college football and basketball and the NFL. After spending his undergrad years at the University of Central Florida he’s “a UCF Knight through and through.” He also enjoys the beach, boating and water sports.
