About James C. McKenzie, MD

Dr. James McKenzie specializes in spine surgery, including disc removal or repair, spinal fusion, and removal of part of the vertebrae to relieve spinal pressure or nerve impingement. He is a founding provider with the Comprehensive Spine Center, a clinical partnership between Redeemer Health and Global Neurosciences Institute.

Dr. McKenzie completed fellowships in clinical research and earned his medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. Following a residency in orthopedic surgery at Jefferson, he fulfilled a spine surgery fellowship at Emory University, where he trained in diagnosis and management of degenerative, traumatic and deformity spinal disorders. He is also a peer reviewer for SPINE and the Global Spine Journal.

In addition to practicing evidence-based medicine, Dr. McKenzie feels that respecting his patients’ time, listening to their concerns, and showing empathy for their unique situations are key to providing good care. His favorite moments are watching his patients wake up from surgery to find that their pain has gone away. “Their immediate relief is a gratifying reward that makes all of the work worthwhile,” he says.

Growing up in Delaware County, Dr. McKenzie observed his parents’ commitment to helping others — his father as a hematologist/oncologist, and his mother as an operating room nurse. He considers himself extremely blessed to continue in their footsteps by caring for those in the Southeast Pennsylvania community. He is especially pleased to work at Redeemer Health, where his beloved grandfather received life-extending cardiology and critical care and participated in our Life Care program.

Dr. McKenzie is married to his high-school sweetheart, Laura, with whom he has two children. He is a diehard Philadelphia sports fan, with a particular passion for the Eagles, having played football for Syracuse University, where he was named an ESPN/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American.
